Whimsical (whimsical.com) is an online whiteboard and documentation tool built for product teams. On its infinite canvas (Boards) you draw flowcharts, wireframes, mind maps, sequence diagrams and sticky notes; alongside it, Docs capture requirements and decisions; and a built-in AI agent (Whimsical Agent) generates and edits diagrams from plain text. The company positions the product as "the whiteboard for product builders," emphasizing speed and a deliberately simple interface (homepage, checked 2026-10-02).

Compared with general-purpose whiteboards like Miro, Whimsical is opinionated: shapes and styles are carefully preset so you can draw without learning a tool, and product, design and engineering can move from process discussion to wireframe on the same canvas. In late 2025 the company narrowed its focus, sunsetting the Projects, Tasks and Posts modules as of January 15, 2026 to concentrate on "boards and docs" (official blog).

Launched Development started summer 2017, first product was flowcharts (official blog)

Background

  • Founding and evolution: Whimsical was started in the summer of 2017 by Kaspars Dancis (now co-founder & CEO). Flowcharts came first, followed by wireframes, mind maps and Docs, gradually forming a collaboration platform (blog: Choosing depth over breadth).
  • Funding: In November 2021 the company announced a $30M Series A led by Accel with participation from Basis Set Ventures; angel investors included GitHub's CEO and COO, Stripe's CPO and Dropbox's co-founder. The announcement notes Whimsical had been bootstrapped and profitable until that point (funding announcement).
  • Strategic refocus: In early 2025 Whimsical launched Projects and Posts, aiming for an all-in-one collaboration hub, but adoption fell short. In November 2025 the company announced it would sunset Projects, Tasks and Posts on January 15, 2026 and refocus on the whiteboard. The same post introduced Applet, a standalone AI product then in public alpha — as of 2026-10-02 applet.dev redirects back to whimsical.com, so its current status is unclear (official blog).
  • Team and operations: Whimsical, Inc. is a US company (terms governed by Delaware law, venue in Denver County, Colorado). The team is fully remote across 12 countries, promotes calm 40-hour weeks, and contributes 1% of revenue to Stripe Climate (terms, careers).

Core Capabilities

Boards: the infinite canvas

  • Diagramming: flowcharts, general diagrams, sequence diagrams, mind maps, sticky notes and freehand sketching, with smart connectors, alignment and auto-layout; diagrams can be copied out as Mermaid code (homepage, 2026-3 release notes).
  • Wireframes: a drag-and-drop, low-fidelity component library for web and mobile UI exploration (homepage).
  • Collaboration: real-time multiplayer editing, comments, @mentions, sticky-note voting, a timer, presentation mode, backlinks and restorable version history (homepage, pricing feature table).

Docs

Docs live in the same workspace as boards and can nest and reference each other. "Multi-page files" (released 2026-12) let one file hold several pages, and boards or folders nested in a doc can be expanded inline (2026-12 release notes). In the pricing model, doc creation is metered in "doc blocks."

Whimsical AI

  • Whimsical Agent: an in-app AI agent that creates and edits flowcharts, wireframes, mind maps, sequence diagrams, sticky notes and docs from natural language; it can search your workspace, reference files via @mentions, and interpret uploaded images (AI page, usage guide).
  • Whimsical MCP: an official MCP server that lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex and other MCP clients create Whimsical diagrams and docs directly; there are also a Claude connector, a Cursor plugin, Microsoft Copilot Studio support and a whiteboard app inside ChatGPT (integrations, 2026-5 release notes).
  • Billing model: AI features consume credits — Free plan members get 10 credits each, and additional credits can be purchased on any plan; the company labels the feature as beta (pricing FAQ, AI credits guide).

Integrations and platforms

Standard integrations include Slack, GitHub, Jira, Linear, Notion, Google Docs and Obsidian, and boards can be embedded live in Asana, Confluence, Coda, Trello, Zendesk and more (integrations). Clients cover the web, macOS (Intel/Apple Silicon), Windows (x64/arm64) and Linux (DEB/RPM, added in 2026) (download, 2026-6 release notes).

Pricing (as of 2026-10-02)

Prices below come from the pricing page and its FAQ. Billing is per editor seat; viewers and guests are free and unlimited:

Plan Yearly (per month) Monthly Highlights
Free $0 $0 Unlimited boards, members and guests; create up to 50 board objects + 50 doc blocks per month; watermark on exports; 7-day version history; 10 AI credits per member; up to 2 free workspaces

Notes (all from the pricing page and FAQ): annual billing saves about 17%; file uploads are 5MB per file / 1GB total on Free, 1GB per file / 100GB on Pro, and 10GB per file / 2TB and up on Business; payment is by credit or debit card, with invoicing available for Business workspaces over 10 editor seats; nonprofits get 20% off, students and teachers can apply for free access, and YouTube creators have a separate free-for-life program (Creators page). The pricing page does not state per-seat AI credit allowances for paid plans, only that credits can be bought on any plan.

The pricing page (2026-10-02, annual view): three tiers side by side; the Free plan is labeled "For evaluating Whimsical," with limits on monthly object/block creation, watermarked exports and 7-day history.

Security and Data Policies

  • Compliance: Whimsical states it is SOC 2 Type II compliant and committed to helping customers meet GDPR and CCPA requirements; reports are available via its Trust Center (security page).
  • Infrastructure: data is hosted on AWS, encrypted in transit with at least TLS 1.2 and at rest with AES-256; payments are processed by Stripe and Whimsical does not store card data (security page).
  • AI data: the AI supplementary terms state that customer data is not used to train machine learning models; AI features are provided via third-party APIs from OpenAI and Anthropic, whose policies also apply when you use them (AI supplementary terms).

Who It's For

  • Product teams where PMs, designers and engineers discuss flows, sketch wireframes and write requirement docs on one canvas.
  • Anyone who needs clean, consistently styled diagrams quickly — process reviews, architecture discussions, brainstorms — rather than highly customized drawing.
  • Teams already working in Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT that want diagram generation inside their AI workflows (via MCP).
  • Budget-conscious small teams: the free plan allows unlimited members and viewers, so evaluation costs nothing.

Limitations

  • The free plan is evaluation-sized: 50 new board objects and 50 doc blocks per month, watermarked exports and 7-day version history mean regular use quickly requires payment (pricing).
  • English-only interface: the UI is officially available in English only, which can be a barrier for non-English teams (help center).
  • No offline mode, no mobile app: Whimsical does not work offline; on phones you get browser-based viewing and commenting only, and iPad relies on the browser (offline FAQ, mobile FAQ).
  • Recent product cuts: Projects, Tasks and Posts were retired in January 2026; teams that relied on them had to migrate, and Whimsical no longer covers task/project management (official blog).
  • AI is still beta: credit-based and non-deterministic — the same prompt may produce different results (AI credits guide).

Alternatives

In the same category, Miro and FigJam are team whiteboards and Lucidchart leans toward professional diagramming; Whimsical differentiates with a more restrained feature set, wireframe components aimed at product workflows, and an aggressive AI/MCP integration path. Open-source options like Excalidraw suit zero-budget, self-hosted or offline use.
