Webflow is a professional-grade visual website builder: you design layouts, styles and interactions on a visual canvas in the browser, and the platform generates the corresponding HTML, CSS and JavaScript in real time. Finished sites publish in one click to Webflow's own hosting with a custom domain. The core problem it solves is letting designers and content teams ship production-ready websites without depending on engineers — unlike template-driven tools such as Wix or Squarespace, Webflow's canvas maps directly to real front-end concepts like the CSS box model, Flexbox and Grid, so design freedom approaches hand-written code. As of 2026-09-29, the company reports 3.5 million users and more than 900 employees across 25 countries, with over 300,000 organizations building on the platform.

Background
Webflow was founded by Vlad Magdalin, his brother Sergie Magdalin and Bryant Chou; the company's About page gives the founding year as 2013, the same summer the team joined Y Combinator's S13 batch. Vlad Magdalin left the USSR as a refugee at age nine and carried roughly $30,000 in credit card debt while getting the company off the ground (source: Forbes company profile).
On funding, Webflow raised a 2.1 billion valuation, followed by a Y Combinator Continuity-led 4 billion valuation; the About page states total funding of $335 million (as of 2026-09-29). In June 2024, then-President and COO Linda Tong became CEO, with co-founder Vlad Magdalin moving to a Chief Innovation Officer role (source: Webflow blog).
Core capabilities
Visual Designer and code generation. The Designer is the heart of the platform: elements, classes and styles map directly to HTML structure and CSS properties (including Flexbox, Grid, variables and custom properties), and interactions and animations — 3D transforms, GSAP-powered motion — are built on the same canvas. Webflow emphasizes that it outputs clean, W3C-compliant semantic code, which paid Workspace plans can export as a ZIP (sources: Features, pricing FAQ).
CMS and content collaboration. The built-in CMS supports custom content structures (Collections), dynamic template pages and on-page visual editing, so editors and clients can change text and images directly on the live site without touching the design. The free plan allows 50 CMS items; the Premium Site plan supports up to 20,000 (as of 2026-09-29, source: pricing).
Hosting and publishing. Sites deploy to Webflow hosting (served via Cloudflare's CDN); the company states SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and CCPA compliance, and enterprise tiers carry a 99.9% uptime SLA (sources: homepage, pricing). Every site gets a webflow.io staging domain, automatic backups and one-click restores.
Template marketplace. For a head start, there are free and paid templates built by community creators; paid templates are one-time purchases, independent of hosting subscriptions, and every template is fully customizable in the Designer (source: Templates).

The screenshot above shows the Webflow template marketplace (captured 2026-09-29), organized into categories such as Portfolio & Agency, Technology, Blog & Editorial, Real Estate and Retail, with each template labeled as free or paid and whether it includes CMS or ecommerce functionality.
Made in Webflow showcase. The company-curated community gallery features "thousands" of real sites (official wording, as of 2026-09-29), filterable by animation, interactions, CMS, ecommerce and portfolio. Many entries are cloneable — copy them into your own account to study or adapt as a starting point.

Ecommerce. Separate ecommerce Site plans support custom carts and checkout; the Standard tier includes 500 items with a 2% transaction fee, while Plus and Advanced waive the fee (as of 2026-09-29, source: pricing).
Extensibility. For code-level needs, the platform supports custom code embeds, importing React components from your codebase (Code components), a REST API, webhooks, OAuth, SDKs and an MCP server (manage CMS content and publishing from clients like Claude or Cursor), plus a third-party app marketplace (source: Developers).
Pricing
Webflow bills in two layers — Site plans and Workspace plans — plus add-ons. The figures below are yearly-billing prices checked on 2026-09-29 (source: pricing; USD, shown as monthly equivalents):

- Site plans (per site): Starter is free (webflow.io domain, 2 static pages, 50 CMS items, 1 GB bandwidth); Basic is 25/month (CMS, up to 20,000 items, up to 2.5 TB bandwidth, site search, code components).
- Platform plans: Team at $2,500/month (annual contract; localization, publishing workflows, site activity log & API and more); Enterprise is custom-priced.
- Ecommerce plans: Standard 74/month, Advanced $212/month.
- Workspace plans (per workspace): Starter free (2 staging sites); Core 49/month (unlimited staging sites, publishing permissions); separate Freelancer (35/month) tiers for client work. Additional full seats cost $39/month each.
- Add-ons: Analyze from 9/month and Advanced 299/month.
Prices are in USD plus applicable taxes; plans can be cancelled anytime, but the remainder of the paid term is not refunded. For learning, Webflow University offers free courses and tutorials, and the Webflow Practitioner certification exam costs $100 (as of 2026-09-29).
Accounts and developer access
- Signup requires no credit card and immediately allows building in a free Workspace and trying templates; browsing the marketplace and showcase needs no account.
- Collaboration happens in Workspaces: invite teammates as full, limited or free reviewer seats; agency plans can hand site billing directly to clients (Client payments).
- Developer platform: REST API (create, update and delete CMS items; manage pages and publishing), webhooks, OAuth 2.0, official SDKs, a CLI and an MCP server; the Marketplace offers third-party apps and integrations (source: Developers).
- Code export: paid Workspace plans can export a site's HTML, CSS, JS and assets for self-hosting, but export is one-way — code cannot be re-imported into Webflow, CMS content must be exported collection by collection, and forms stop working outside Webflow hosting (source: pricing FAQ).
Copyright and content policy
Under the Terms of Service effective November 2023, users retain ownership of their Website Content but grant Webflow a non-exclusive worldwide license to host, display, improve and promote the platform; the separate license letting Webflow feature your site in its marketing can be revoked by email. Templates and marketplace content are covered by additional terms such as the Template License Policy.
Content is governed by the Acceptable Use Policy (effective October 2022), which prohibits spam and phishing, fraud and impersonation, restricted goods such as weapons, harmful or illegal content, hate and child-exploitation material, sexually explicit content (with discretion for educational, documentary, scientific or artistic work), misinformation, intellectual-property infringement and publishing sensitive personal information. Violations can lead to content removal and account suspension or termination, and Webflow states its determinations are final.
When it fits
- Designers and freelancers who want to deliver custom, launch-ready sites without handing work to engineers;
- Marketing and content teams that need to ship landing pages and CMS content — and run A/B tests and conversion optimization — without waiting on developer queues;
- Agencies building client sites at scale, where templates, shared component libraries and client handoff (Client payments, client editor seats) form a ready-made delivery workflow;
- Learners studying modern layout and interaction, who can clone real projects from Made in Webflow and follow free Webflow University courses.
Limitations
- The interface is English-only, with no localized versions (checked 2026-09-29).
- Design freedom comes with a learning curve: the canvas exposes box-model, class and cascade concepts, so users with no design or front-end background face a steeper start than with pure template drag-and-drop builders.
- Pricing is layered and stacks per site — Site plans, Workspace seats and add-ons are billed separately, so costs grow quickly with many sites; code export, the full CMS and publishing permissions all sit behind paid tiers.
- The free plan publishes only to a webflow.io subdomain with tight limits (2 static pages, 50 CMS items), so running a real site effectively requires payment.
- Vendor lock-in: CMS, forms and ecommerce depend on Webflow hosting; exported code cannot be re-imported, and dynamic content and forms must be rebuilt after migrating away.
- Support is primarily email-based with a stated 48-hour response goal (source: pricing FAQ); free and lower-tier plans have no real-time support channel.
Alternatives
- Framer: also designer-oriented, with a lighter scope skewed toward marketing pages and publishing prototypes directly.
- Wix Studio: Wix's line for professional agencies — more template-driven and easier to pick up.
- Squarespace: a mainstream builder known for template quality, with less room for customization than Webflow.
- WordPress: the open-source, self-hosted route with the largest ecosystem, at the cost of maintaining hosting, plugins and security updates yourself.
