Typewolf is a typography reference built around how type actually performs on real websites. It features one well-typeset site per day with every font identified, and maintains individual profile pages for more than a thousand typefaces with similar fonts, free alternatives, and pairing suggestions. Unlike foundry specimen pages, everything on Typewolf is written from the perspective of a designer choosing fonts for real projects, which makes it a practical first stop when picking type for web or brand work.

Background
Typewolf was launched in June 2013 as a side project by designer Jeremiah Shoaf, and is operated by Jeremiah Shoaf Design LLC; the footer notes it is "Made in Oregon." The About page explains the motivation: as a practicing designer, Shoaf found "the quick brown fox" style font specimens unhelpful—judging whether a typeface works for web design is far easier when you can see it on real websites—and most typography sites at the time were written from a type designer's perspective rather than a type user's.
The site commits to remaining independent, featuring typefaces from all foundries regardless of where the fonts are sold. The About page claims over 350,000 unique visitors and more than 1,000,000 pageviews per month (self-reported, not third-party verified). The backend runs on Statamic, a flat-file CMS, hosted by DreamHost.
Daily Picks: What's Trending in Type
The homepage section "What's Trending in Type" (formerly Site of the Day) is the core of the site: each entry shows a key screen from a real website and identifies every font used, with links straight into the corresponding font profiles. The archive shows roughly 396 pages—thousands of entries—accumulated so far.

One caveat on freshness: the About page says the site has been updated daily since June 2013, but as of our check on 2026-09-18, the newest entry on the homepage and in the archive was dated December 14, 2025. The daily cadence appears to have slowed or paused. The existing archive remains fully accessible.
Font Profiles and Pairing References
Typewolf maintains standalone pages for over 1,000 typefaces (per the About page). Using Futura as an example, each font page includes:
- A custom-written background note covering the designer, era, and usage history;
- Similar fonts and a "Top 10 Alternatives" list;
- Availability on Adobe Fonts and the Monotype subscription;
- The closest free alternative on Google Fonts (cross-referenced with its PDF guide);
- A suggested pairing, plus real sites from the archive that use the typeface.

Around these profiles, the site maintains extensive lists: Top 10s by classification (sans-serif, serif, slab serif, humanist sans, monospaced, rounded), alternative lists for classic typefaces (Helvetica, Futura, Proxima Nova, and more), and platform-specific picks such as the Top 40 Google Fonts and Top 40 Adobe Fonts.
Font Usage Data
The Font Usage Data page aggregates more than a decade of curation into statistics: a Top 50 of the most-featured fonts on Typewolf (by number of appearances, e.g., Apercu with 101 and GT America with 97), plus a yearly Top 10 for every year from 2013 through 2025. It is a direct answer to "what fonts has web design actually been using lately?"

Free Guides and Paid Products
The Learning Resources section offers several free resources, including The Definitive Guide to Free Fonts—a PDF covering free alternatives to more than 1,000 typefaces—typography book reviews, and a long-running blog. The paid product is Flawless Typography Checklist, a typography master course formatted as an interactive checklist, listed at $399 on the homepage.
Nothing on the site sits behind a paywall. The support channels it discloses are sales of its own products and merchandise, affiliate commissions from MyFonts purchase links, and Adobe Creative Cloud affiliate links; clearly labeled display ads also appear on the homepage. Purchase and subscription links on font pages belong to the same affiliate programs, which is worth keeping in mind when weighing the recommendations.
Accounts and Privacy
Typewolf has no account system; everything is publicly readable. The only user interaction is the email list: one email every Tuesday (run through Kit) with the latest featured sites, and site submissions are accepted only from subscribers who reply to the newsletter. The privacy policy states that email addresses are collected solely for the mailing list and are never shared, and the About page colophon explicitly notes the site does not use Google Analytics or any other analytics.
When It Helps
- Choosing fonts for a web or brand project and wanting to see real-world typesetting first;
- Finding free or cheaper alternatives to commercial typefaces, especially via Google Fonts;
- Researching recent web typography trends with concrete usage data;
- Learning font pairing through the site's large set of real combination examples.
Limitations
- The interface and all content are English-only.
- Curation has visibly slowed: as of 2026-09-18, the newest featured site dates to mid-December 2025, so recency suffers, though the profiles and statistics retain historical value.
- Font purchase and subscription links carry affiliate commissions, so treat recommendations as a starting point rather than the final word.
- Traffic figures are self-reported, with no third-party verification.
- Coverage centers on Latin type; there is little here for CJK typography.
