Product Hunt (producthunt.com) is a product-discovery community built around a daily leaderboard: every day, newly launched apps, websites, hardware and AI tools are ranked by community votes, with a comment thread under each product where the makers themselves answer questions. Its value isn't reviews — it's "launch + discussion." Many teams treat a Product Hunt launch as step one for early users and press attention (checked 2026-10-04).

Background

Product Hunt was created by Ryan Hoover, who started it on November 6, 2013 as an email list built with Linkydink; the first website was built with Nathan Bashaw over the 2013 Thanksgiving break (Hoover's own account). It went through Y Combinator in 2014 and was acquired by AngelList in November 2016 for about $20 million, continuing as an independent brand (TechCrunch 2016-12-01). Leadership has turned over since: Josh Buckley became CEO in 2020, followed by Rajiv Ayyangar in 2023, around which time roughly 60% of the team was laid off (Wikipedia, checked 2026-10-04).

Core capabilities

  • Daily leaderboard: a new ranking every calendar day, ordered by upvotes and discussion; past days remain browsable.
  • Product pages: each product gets a page with description, screenshots, links, maker badges and a discussion thread; products aggregate into browsable profile pages.
  • Launch mechanics: makers can launch their own product, or community "hunters" can feature it; rallying votes on launch day is a common cold-start play.
  • Topics and collections: browse by topic (AI, SaaS, developer tools…) or by editorial and community collections.
  • Adjacent sections: jobs, forum-style Discussions, and promotional products for launchers.

Content policy

Product information, comments and other submissions are "user submissions" governed by the Terms of Use; copyright complaints follow a DMCA process under a separate Copyright Dispute Policy. When featuring someone else's product, stick to official names, screenshots and links to avoid trademark or image misuse.

Good for

  • Developers and founders launching cold: early users, feedback and backlinks.
  • Casual browsers: a few minutes a day to see what's new, especially in AI and productivity.
  • Research: watching how a category's newcomers are received by the community.

Limitations

  • The leaderboard is heavily community-driven: vote-rallying and launch-day pushes are common, and vote counts say little about product quality.
  • Selection skews to English-language tech products; Chinese products rarely appear; English-only interface.
  • Coverage centers on launch moment — weak at tracking products over time, so it can't serve as a review site.
  • Leadership changes and layoffs have periodically shifted the community's tone and operations.

Alternatives

  • AlternativeTo: organizes software by "find alternatives to X" — retrieval over launches.
  • Hacker News: general tech discussion; the Show HN section also serves product launches.
  • BetaList: focuses on even earlier-stage (pre-launch/beta) products.
