iconfont (iconfont.cn, officially "阿里巴巴矢量图标库" — Alibaba Vector Icon Library) is a Chinese vector icon management and sharing platform operated by the marketing research and experience center of Alimama, Alibaba's marketing-technology arm. Designers upload icons to the platform; users search and download them in several formats; and the platform can convert a set of icons into a font file so front-end developers can reference icons in code. Its verifiable distinction from plain icon-stock sites is an integrated, Chinese-language workflow that combines a UGC icon library, team "projects", and on-demand icon-font generation — the homepage search box displays a live counter reading "search across 33,844,467 icons" (as of 2026-09-01). The site has also expanded well beyond icons into vector illustrations, 3D illustrations, Lottie animations, a font library, and a set of AI design tools.

Background

The site describes itself (in the site-wide footer and help center) as a vector icon management and exchange platform built by Alimama's marketing research and experience center. Legally, the 2026 Terms of Service name Hangzhou Yihong Advertising Co., Ltd. as the service provider — third-party records place it inside the Alimama corporate family — and note that the related deep-synthesis algorithm service is provided by Hangzhou Wanxiang Creative Technology Co., Ltd. There is no official launch-date statement; two Chinese design-media reports from 2022 (Logonews and Logosc) both say the site was created in 2013, so "launched around 2013" is the best-supported date. The brand adopted its current chameleon mascot in August 2022 with the slogan "variable assets, as you wish"; the homepage tagline today is "variable assets, infinite AI".

The platform's scope has visibly broadened in recent years. The "asset library" navigation now covers icon libraries (official / multicolor / monochrome), vector illustrations, 3D illustrations, Lottie animations, a font library and a "GenUI" section, alongside entries for "AI creation" (the if Studio workbench), "AI tools" (the Wanxiang toolbox: background removal, upscaling and similar) and "AI icon generation" — a shift from icon library toward an "assets + AI design tools" platform.

One incident worth knowing: in early June 2022 the entire site went into "system upgrade maintenance" and was unreachable for several days, as recorded by multiple design-media outlets and community posts at the time; no official announcement survives. As of 2026-09-01 the site is fully operational, with search and download flows working.

Core Capabilities

Search and browse (no account needed). Keyword fuzzy search covers both icons and designers, and the official help page claims seamless Chinese / English / Pinyin query translation (feature overview). Result pages offer style filters (line, filled, flat, hand-drawn, minimal, refined) and color filters. In testing, the homepage, icon libraries and search results all rendered completely while logged out; searching "首页" (homepage) displayed "5000 icons" — likely a display cap, not officially confirmed — across 93 result pages as of 2026-08-30.

Downloads and the cart. The help center documents AI / SVG / PNG / code download formats; the detail view shows which library and author an icon belongs to, supports per-path recoloring of multicolor icons, and remembers recently used colors. A cart supports batch-downloading assets and code, and batch-adding icons to a project. Downloading requires an account: clicking a download button while logged out opens the sign-in dialog.

Projects and icon fonts. "Projects" are shared team workspaces: visual designers upload icons, interaction and product roles download them, and front-end developers consume the set as a font — officially "three code formats" (commonly known in the community as the Unicode, Font Class and Symbol inclusion methods). A project can also generate a hosted link on Alibaba's CDN (at.alicdn.com) for direct referencing. Font generation relies on the third-party C library fontforge, and the official FAQ recommends assigning unicodes starting from e600 (FAQ).

Uploads and icon libraries. Designers can upload single or batched icons, mono- or multicolor, with custom tags; the drawing guidelines require a 1024×1024 artboard, closed and merged paths, solid fills (no gradients) and outlined strokes. Icon libraries must pass review (officially 1–2 working days) before they can be made public or encrypted, and come in official, custom and multicolor variants. A tipping feature supports designers at the user and library level.

Official typefaces. The font library hosts an "Alimama Zhizaozi" (Alimama intelligent type-making) section listing five official families as of 2026-09-01: Alimama DaoLiTi, FangYuanTi (variable), Agile (variable), DongFangDaKai and ShuHeiTi, positioned as "rooted in commerce, benefiting merchants". Each family page carries its own legal statement; ShuHeiTi's statement is widely quoted by Chinese font sites as permitting free commercial use, but we did not verify each statement in full — check the statement on each typeface's page before commercial use.

Accounts and Open Capabilities

Registration is phone number + SMS code + slider verification. Sign-in supports a native iconfont account (phone number), third-party WeChat, GitHub and Sina Weibo accounts, plus an "Alibaba domain account" entry restricted to Alibaba employees. An old official FAQ recommending GitHub sign-in when Weibo login was unstable matches the current multi-provider setup. The download-requires-login rule has existed since at least 2020 (a third-party tutorial from that year already lists signing in as a download step); when free anonymous downloading ended could not be verified.

There is no public API or open platform; the officially supported integration is the project font CDN link described above. Feedback channels are the official GitHub issues repository thx/iconfont-plus and the email iconfont@list.alibaba-inc.com.

Copyright and Content Policy

Assets are designer-uploaded UGC, and the platform positions itself as a "vector technology exchange, learning and sharing platform". The Terms of Service (updated 2026-03-26, effective 2026-04-02) state that the platform only provides technical support for creating, storing and managing assets and "cannot review one by one" the legality of the massive volume of uploads; users judge usage risk themselves, and rights holders can file a notice through the contact channel in the site footer.

Asset licensing follows three uploader-set labels per the platform legal statement: assets marked "free to use" (or published as a personal public library) are licensed by the uploader for other users to download and use during the display period, with the platform permitted to repost and recommend them; assets marked "paid use" require contacting the uploader for authorization first; assets marked "open source" must be used within the referenced open-source license.

Several 2026 clauses deserve attention: whether or not an asset is marked "free to use", users may not re-upload it to third-party platforms as their own or as authorized material, may not sell it as printed matter, physical or digital products, and may not use it for model training; by uploading, users grant the platform and its affiliates the right to use their assets for community showcases, case promotion, derivative assets, machine learning and algorithm-model training; AI-generated content carries explicit labels and implicit metadata markers by default. The terms also require users to be 18 or older and prohibit accessing or scraping the platform with bots or crawlers.

In short, copyright stays with the uploading designer, and a "free to use" label is not unconditional free commercial use — before commercial use, rely on the license label on the asset page and the copyright notice in the download dialog.

When It Fits

  • Finding icons by Chinese keywords and downloading SVG / PNG / AI files for design and prototyping.
  • Managing a project's icons as an icon font: generate the three code formats or a hosted CDN link from a project and maintain the set as a team.
  • Publishing original icons as a designer, building a personal icon library, passing review and receiving tips.
  • Commercial visuals that can use Alimama's official typefaces (subject to each family's legal statement).

Limitations

  • Downloads require an account, and registration needs a mainland-China phone number for SMS verification; usability of overseas numbers is unverified.
  • The interface is Simplified Chinese only (the homepage meta tags even declare google: notranslate).
  • Asset copyright remains with uploaders and the platform does not review each upload; the commercial-usability boundary of "free to use" assets must be assessed case by case.
  • No public API, and the terms explicitly prohibit crawling and bulk scraping; automation is limited to project CDN links.
  • The 2026 terms allow the platform to use uploaded assets for model training — a clause contributing designers should be aware of.
  • Hosted project font links live on Alibaba's CDN, so production use depends on its availability; the multi-day site-wide maintenance in June 2022 illustrates the single-point-of-failure risk.
