Doubao (doubao.com) is ByteDance's all-in-one AI assistant and, by available third-party measurements, the most-used consumer AI product in China: per QuestMobile data for Q3 and year-end 2025, the Doubao app reached roughly 172 million monthly active users with daily active users past 100 million, ahead of DeepSeek (145M MAU) and Tencent Yuanbao (32.9M) (figures as cited by Chinese Wikipedia). Its purpose is to package large-model capabilities into everyday tools: Q&A chat, web-connected search, writing and translation, PPT and spreadsheet generation, image and video generation, voice calls, meeting transcription, and — its 2026 focus — a "Work Mode" office agent. Its verifiable differences from domestic peers lie in deep integration with the ByteDance ecosystem: Douyin account interoperability, a Feishu (Lark)-based enterprise edition, models and APIs supplied by Volcano Engine, and clients spanning web, desktop, mobile apps, a browser extension, and mini-programs. Since June 2026, Doubao has layered paid subscriptions on top of a free tier it says will remain permanently.

Background

Doubao was ByteDance's first large-scale AI conversational product. It grew out of an internal project codenamed "Grace" and launched publicly on August 18, 2023, with the app and web version released together, initially offering text and image conversation (Pandaily, 2023-08-18). On May 15, 2024, ByteDance's cloud arm Volcano Engine formally released the Doubao large model (originally named "Skylark"/Yunque) with aggressive API pricing that kicked off an industry price war (Caixin report, as cited by Chinese Wikipedia). By November 2024, Doubao had become China's most popular AI chatbot at roughly 60 million monthly active users (English Wikipedia).

Later milestones, all from first-hand reporting or official pages:

  • Model iterations: Doubao Seed 2.0 shipped on February 14, 2026; the Doubao 2.1 series arrived with the Pro tier on June 24, 2026 (English Wikipedia, IT Home). Daily token usage across the Doubao model family passed 120 trillion in April 2026 (36Kr).
  • Phone assistant: On December 1, 2025, the Doubao team released a technical preview of the Doubao Phone Assistant, an OS-level collaboration with ZTE that debuted on the nubia M153 engineering device (RMB 3,499; the ~30,000-unit run sold out quickly). The assistant operates across apps to complete tasks on the phone; ByteDance has repeatedly stated it does not make phones itself. A mass-production model, the nubia NaviX Ultra, launched on September 16, 2026 (IT Home; Chinese Wikipedia).
  • In-car voice: Since August 2025, Tesla's voice assistant for the Chinese market has integrated the Doubao model (English Wikipedia, citing SCMP/Bloomberg).
  • Monetization: Paid-subscription terms appeared on Doubao's App Store listing in early May 2026 (The Paper, 2026-05-04, as cited by Wikipedia), and "Doubao Pro" formally launched on June 24, 2026.
  • Regulatory adjustment: On July 15, 2026, Doubao and Alibaba's Qwen removed their anthropomorphic "AI agent/companion" features on the same day to comply with new Chinese regulations on human-like AI services; other features were unaffected (CNA and others, as cited by Chinese Wikipedia).

One clarification on entities: the legal operator named in Doubao's agreements is Beijing Chuntian Zhiyun Technology Co., Ltd. (consistent across the Terms of Service and the download page's ICP filing), while the underlying models and developer APIs are supplied by ByteDance's Volcano Engine.

Core capabilities: from chatting to getting work done

The web app's homepage (doubao.com/chat/) is the product in miniature: a single prompt box with a "Chat / Work" mode switch on top. Shortcut chips on the input bar enumerate the main capabilities — PPT generation, image generation, writing help, video generation, deep research, audio transcription — alongside a model selector (showing "Doubao · Fast" when observed) and voice input. The left rail offers "New Work Task," "New Chat," and an "API Services" entry (observed logged out on 2026-09-17).

Per the official download page, the capability stack currently looks like this:

  • Chat and creation: text/voice conversation, web-connected AI search with cited sources, writing and translation, image generation (Seedream models), video generation (the download page credits Seedance 2.5 for the Pro tier, while the homepage meta description says Seedance 2.0 is fully integrated and free to use after sign-in), music generation, and more.
  • Work Mode (office tasks): pitches the AI as a "work buddy" rather than a Q&A bot — it writes documents, builds spreadsheets and slide decks, drafts web pages, and can operate a computer and browser inside a virtual desktop to execute multi-step tasks. Users can watch progress in real time, pause, or take over; actions involving payments, identity verification, or high-risk system permissions require manual confirmation (Section 2.5 of the Terms of Service).
  • AI editing and Feishu integration: point at a specific spot in a document, deck, or web page for targeted edits; in enterprise scenarios, Feishu integration lets Doubao pull meeting outcomes, summarize group chats, and draft weekly reports.
  • Companion cloud drive: documents, decks, sheets, and transcripts Doubao generates — plus files uploaded in chat — are stored automatically in its "AI Cloud Drive," synced across devices, with paid storage expansion beyond the free quota (Section 4.3 of the Paid Service Agreement).

Pricing: free tier stays, three Pro tiers

Doubao was entirely free for its first two years. "Doubao Pro" launched on June 24, 2026 with three auto-renewing tiers (The Paper, IT Home; as of 2026-09-17):

Additional rules:

  • The free tier remains. Doubao says existing features and quotas already cover most users' daily needs, and free users get a limited quota of the Work Task mode running on the Doubao 2.1 Turbo model.
  • Student discount: verified university students get the Standard tier at RMB 38/month for six months.
  • Member-only creation top-up packs: subscribers can buy one-off quota packs for concentrated image/video generation (no auto-renewal); paid cloud-storage expansion is also available (Paid Service Agreement).
  • Refunds: purchases are virtual goods and, except where law or the agreement provides otherwise, are non-refundable and non-transferable. Auto-renewal (monthly/yearly) can be cancelled at any time; payment channels include Alipay, WeChat Pay, Douyin Pay, and Apple IAP.

Accounts and openness

  • Guest mode: part of the web app works without an account, but paid services cannot be purchased and conversation history is not kept.
  • Sign-in methods (web dialog observed 2026-09-17, plus the Privacy Policy): phone number (including carrier one-click), Douyin account, Apple ID, Feishu account, or QR-code scan from the Doubao/Feishu apps. Linking a Douyin account enables Douyin-related services inside Doubao (interacting with search content, browsing and ordering products, and so on).
  • One account across devices: web, Windows/macOS/Linux desktop clients, iOS/Android apps, browser extension, and mini-programs share one account, with cloud-drive files and conversation history synced. The Doubao account also works as a credential across designated "in-system products" (Section 4.4 of the paid agreement).
  • Enterprise edition: sign in with a Feishu account or use it inside Feishu directly; enterprise data belongs to the organization. Coding-feature output ("apps") is hosted and published on the Feishu platform (Sections 1.4/1.6 of the Privacy Policy).
  • Developer API: the "API Services" entry in the web sidebar actually leads to a Volcano Engine (ai.volcengine.com) authorization page — model APIs are sold separately by Volcano Engine on token-based pricing, distinct from the consumer subscription.

Privacy and content policy

For a product that assumes sign-in and binds deeply into the ByteDance ecosystem, several clauses are worth reading before use (both the Privacy Policy and the Terms of Service were updated 2026-09-10 and took effect 2026-09-17):

  • Your content may train models: personal-edition inputs, instructions, and generated responses may by default be used for model training and product improvement; there is an opt-out under Settings → Privacy & Permissions → "Help improve the model." The paid agreement additionally grants the company a worldwide, free, non-exclusive, sublicensable license over inputs and generated content, with an opt-out via the feedback email.
  • IP allocation: users retain rights to their inputs, and the company claims no ownership of AI outputs — but outputs are "for reference only" and must not serve as professional medical, legal, or investment advice.
  • Data residency and compliance: personal information is stored within mainland China; the service holds a Classified Protection of Information Security (MLPS) Level 3 filing. AI-generated content carries explicit/implicit labels as required by Chinese regulations.
  • Real-name scenarios: viewing answers in the homework-help ("photo a question") feature legally requires real-name verification; minors need guardian consent.

Who it's for

  • Everyday Q&A and life assistance: lookups, translation, voice chat, avatar/image generation — the free quota generally covers light use.
  • Students: homework help by photo, tutoring, writing assistance, plus a discounted student subscription.
  • Office document production: decks, spreadsheets, weekly reports, and meeting minutes (audio transcription) generated end-to-end into the cloud drive; heavy office use maps to the Pro tiers.
  • Content creation: image and short-video generation on Seedream/Seedance models, with member-only top-up packs for concentrated creation sessions.
  • Enterprises on Feishu: organizations already on Feishu can let Doubao read their knowledge base via the enterprise edition and publish hosted apps.
  • Phone power users: partner handsets with the Doubao Phone Assistant can complete cross-app tasks like ticket booking and price comparison.

Limitations

  • Language and region locks: the web interface is Simplified Chinese only. Overseas users are expected to use the international app Dola (formerly Cici — which runs on GPT/Gemini models, not the Doubao model), and Chinese Wikipedia notes that US IP addresses see a "this region is restricted" notice.
  • The free tier has a hard ceiling: heavy productivity scenarios (batch PPT generation, data analysis, longer video creation) are explicitly positioned as paid, and free users may be throttled at peak times. Exact quota numbers are shown only after sign-in, on the subscription page — no public schedule.
  • Anthropomorphic agents removed: the custom-companion ("AI buddy") feature was discontinued on July 15, 2026 to comply with new regulations.
  • Broad content licensing: personal-edition conversations feed model training by default (manual opt-out required) — a real cost for privacy-sensitive users.
  • No output guarantees: the agreements state outputs may be wrong, are for reference only, and that cited search sources carry no accuracy guarantee.
  • Deep ecosystem binding: account, payments, cloud drive, and the enterprise edition lean on Douyin, Douyin Pay, and Feishu respectively — a hurdle for users outside the ByteDance stack.
  • No refunds on virtual goods: purchases are in principle non-refundable once made.

Alternatives

  • Kimi: Moonshot AI's assistant, known for long-context handling and consumer experience; also has paid membership tiers.
  • DeepSeek: open-weight models; official web and app chat are fully free with no membership IAP, and API prices are extremely low.
  • Tencent Yuanbao: Tencent's assistant, tied into the WeChat/Official Accounts content ecosystem.
  • Qwen (Tongyi): Alibaba's assistant, strong in open source and enterprise; the company publicly said in November 2025 it had no plans to charge consumers (as cited by 36Kr).
