Craft (craft.do) is a structured document and notes app: text, checklists, images and cards live as movable blocks, pages nest inside each other, and tasks, a calendar and daily notes share the same workspace. It tackles a familiar trade-off in writing tools — simple apps that quickly hit a ceiling versus powerful ones that feel bloated — by staying easy to start while offering nested structure, web publishing and collaboration. Its verifiable differentiator is native-app polish and design quality: it won Apple's Mac App of the Year in the 2021 App Store Awards and was an Apple Design Awards finalist (award list in the site footer, checked 2026-10-02).

Background

  • Founder and team: Craft was founded by CEO Balint Orosz, who tells the origin story on the About page. Per TechCrunch, his previous company Distinction was acquired by Skyscanner, where he then led mobile strategy (TechCrunch, Apr 2021). The product team is based in Budapest, Hungary: Hungarian outlet Index described the app as "developed by a Hungarian team" and the award trophy being delivered to "Craft's Budapest office" (Index.hu, Dec 2021).
  • Legal entity: The operating company is Craft Docs Limited, registered in England (company no. 12092174) with a registered office in London; the terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales (Terms) — a Hungarian team operating through a UK company.
  • Funding: 8MSeriesAinApril2021ledbyCreandum,withInReachVenturesandSkyscannerco−founderGarethWilliamsamongparticipants;a8M Series A in April 2021 led by Creandum, with InReach Ventures and Skyscanner co-founder Gareth Williams among participants; a12.2M Series B in September 2022 led by EBRD Venture Capital (official Series B announcement).
  • Product timeline: macOS/iOS debut in November 2020; Mac App of the Year 2021; the web app entered beta in 2021 and became fully available in August 2022; Windows shipped in September 2022; Android arrived in November 2025 (official platform docs, Windows launch post). Craft 3, released November 28, 2024, was a deliberate pivot: the company stepped back from selling to businesses and refocused on personal notes and tasks (official Craft 3 announcement, The Verge).
  • Scale: the official education page claims "2M+ users" and a 4.8 App Store rating (as of 2026-10-02, vendor-stated); the company's September 2022 announcement cited "over one million installs".

Core capabilities

  • Block-based structured writing: text, checklists, code, images, cards and quotes are all movable blocks; pages nest inside pages; embeds cover videos, PDFs, tweets and Figma files, with instant link previews (Write page).
  • Tasks, calendar and daily notes: tasks live inside documents; Daily Notes hang off the calendar view and work as a journal or lightweight planner; on Mac, Craft syncs with Apple Calendar (not available on Windows/Web) and imports tasks from Apple Reminders (Plan page, calendar integration docs).

The Plan page (screenshot, 2026-10-02) demonstrates how Daily Notes merge the day's tasks and freeform journaling in one page.

  • Organization: Spaces separate work from personal life; folders and tags provide lightweight structure; Collections turn notes into property-based databases (reading lists, movie logs) with filters by tag, due date and more (Organize page).
  • Whiteboards: an infinite canvas for visual thinking and freeform collaboration (site feature list).
  • AI assistant: the built-in Craft Assistant summarizes, translates, runs custom prompts, powers semantic search, reviews documents and answers questions about images and PDFs. Two model families: cloud tiers — Max (Claude Sonnet 4.6), Fast (Claude Haiku 4.5), Core (GPT-5 Nano) — which consume plan quota; and on-device models (Apple Foundation Model, LLaMa 3.2; Mac/iPad/iPhone only) that are free and keep data on the device. You can also bring your own OpenAI or Anthropic credentials (AI model docs, usage docs, as of 2026-10-02).
  • Publishing and collaboration: documents can be published as public web pages with a craft.me subdomain (all plans), custom paths, custom domains (Plus and up), QR codes and analytics; share links let others view or edit without an account, alongside comments, real-time editing and shared spaces (publishing docs, education page).
  • Import and export: migration paths from Notion, Evernote, Google Docs, Obsidian, Bear, Apple Notes, OneNote, Roam Research and more; single documents export to PDF, Word, image, Markdown and TextBundle (email export on Apple platforms), and whole folders or spaces can be exported (export docs).

Accounts and open platform

Craft requires an account and syncs through its cloud (offline-first: offline works out of the box on macOS/iOS and must be enabled in settings on Web/Windows, per the offline docs). The open platform has become a focus in recent years:

  • MCP connections: connect Craft documents to MCP clients such as Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code and Raycast, letting external AI tools read and write your notes.
  • Craft API: an official REST API; the pricing page lists 100 requests/minute for both Free and Plus.
  • Integrations and automation: Apple Shortcuts, Siri, URL schemes, Email to Craft, a Web Clipper (Chrome/Safari/Firefox), Readwise and more; the site's Imagine section publishes build guides for Lovable, Replit, Bolt, v0, n8n and Manus, plus community templates (Imagine).

Privacy and data policy

The security page states that Craft does not sell user data or use it for advertising, encrypts data at rest and in transit, is SOC 2 certified and GDPR compliant, runs regular third-party penetration tests, and commits to notifying users within 72 hours of learning of a breach (Security). The privacy policy additionally promises never to use customer data to train AI models, using only voluntarily submitted feedback on AI outputs to improve the service (Privacy Policy, checked 2026-10-02).

Who it's for

  • Writers, students and knowledge workers — especially on Apple devices — who value native feel and visual polish.
  • People who want notes, tasks and scheduling in one place instead of switching between a to-do app and a docs app.
  • Individuals and small teams publishing polished web pages (resumes, portfolios, internal docs, small blogs).
  • Users who want their personal knowledge base reachable from AI workflows like Claude or ChatGPT (MCP/API).

Limitations

  • Tight free tier: 1,500 blocks and 1 GB of storage run out quickly for heavy users; sustained use effectively requires Plus (pricing as of 2026-10-02).
  • Cloud-synced architecture: documents sync through Craft's cloud rather than living as local files (as with Obsidian); data-sovereignty-minded users should weigh this, though on-device AI models reduce some privacy exposure.
  • Uneven platform parity: Apple Calendar integration is Mac-only; the Android app only launched in November 2025 and is still being actively built out per official docs; offline mode on Web/Windows must be enabled manually, and those platforms offer fewer UI languages.
  • Closed source, no self-hosting.
  • Collaboration centers on shared spaces and link sharing; enterprise-grade permissioning is no longer a focus after Craft 3's pivot to personal use (The Verge).

Alternatives

Craft's own comparison hub benchmarks it against Notion, Evernote, Obsidian, Google Docs, OneNote and GoodNotes: versus Notion it pitches faster native performance and offline-first design; versus Obsidian, zero setup with built-in sync; versus Evernote, a modern architecture.
